You see, YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI (real name Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji) came up with the idea for Prime Hydration, which blew up in 2022 and changed the drink or beverage world forever, not just in the USA, but in many parts of the world. And yes, in just the first year, these drinks made an amazing $250 million. They were a huge hit right away. Prime’s sales went through the roof and topped $1.2 billion by 2023! That’s crazy, right? But recently, there were some wild claims against them, which ultimately resulted in this so-called Prime Energy Drink Lawsuit PFAS. Heard of it? Well, let’s take a look.
What’s This Prime Energy Drink Lawsuit PFAS All About?
So, let’s get to it. You see, recently, Prime Hydration has been seriously accused of some very bad things. The main allegation or problem? Well, there are allegations that Prime’s drinks have PFAS aka Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in them, which are harmful chemicals that you should stay away from let alone drink such drinks. Furthermore, there is a fuss regarding the caffeine level being higher than stated.
According to a lawsuit brought by Elizabeth Castillo in August 2023, Prime’s grape flavor contained PFAS according to tests done by outside aka third parties. Because she knows now she wouldn’t have bought it, she’s suing for $5 million in damages.
There is another case in April 2024. New Yorker Lara Vera says Prime’s energy drinks have more caffeine than they should, they say they have 200 milligrams of caffeine, but tests show they have between 215 and 225 milligrams. She’s also asking for $5 million.
The Lowdown on PFAS and Caffeine
Let’s break it down. A lot of people call PFAS “forever chemicals,” and they are bad for our bodies, obviously if we consume such chemicals in higher quantities. They stay in the environment and in our bodies, which can cause health problems like infertility, delays in development for kids, cancer, high cholesterol, and problems with hormones. Not quite how you’d like your drinks, right?
Another big deal is caffeine. For kids in particular, too much of it can be bad. Think of a fast heartbeat, headaches, seizures, and changes in how you feel, those are some of the health problems a young adult or a child can face when consuming too much caffeine in one go. Different amounts are safe, but balance is key, you know?
Prime’s Side of the Story
You see, it is pretty obvious that Logan Paul isn’t going to take these comments at face value. In a TikTok video, he said that the case was not valid. Paul said that the PFAS might be in the packaging instead of the drink itself. He has already stated that Prime Hydration follows all federal rules for packaging food and drinks.
Prime Hydration also stressed how strict their quality control is. To make sure the water in their drinks is clean, they use top-notch cleaning methods. As per the Prime Hydration itself, well, they claim that they also keep samples from each batch to make sure they keep the quality and safety standards high.
