Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Faces One More Lawsuit

Cal Farley's Lawsuit

Established in Texas in 1939, Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch has long been renowned for its goal of offering at-risk young people a secure and encouraging space. All in all, kids from challenging backgrounds can live, learn, and flourish here. Nonetheless, over the years the Ranch has come under major accusations of mistreatment notwithstanding its honorable goal. And that is precisely where this Cal Farley’s Lawsuit talks come into the scene, you know? Though, a significant lawsuit against the institution has since been launched, highlighting the alarming experiences of two former residents and posing important issues about the safety and well-being of children in such institutions.

Historical Context of Allegations In This Cal Farley’s Lawsuit

The charges leveled against Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch have nothing new about them. Why exactly? Well, the reports of physical and sexual violence at the Ranch span the 1950s and into the 2000s. Many former residents and even staff members have come out over the years with horrific tales of rape by older residents and even staff members, abuse, and cruel whippings. These stories present a bleak picture of very disturbed surroundings where helpless children were left defenseless. For decades, survivors have battled the long-term consequences including mental health problems, drug addiction, and homelessness.

The Current Lawsuit

In May 2019, two former residents filed a lawsuit in Potter County District Court.  Claiming to be Stuart Roberts and Andy White, they say they were sexually assaulted by elderly Ranch occupants soon after they arrived. Stuart’s parents sent him to the Ranch in 2010 when he was 11, and Andy showed up in 2015 at the age of 9. Both kids say the Ranch neglected to guard them and they were subjected to sexually aggressive behavior within days of their arrival.

How Cal Farley’s is Responding

Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch responded by saying they are dedicated to preserving their rights and are gathering additional data on this. Spokesman Cary Varnado underlined that the Ranch still provides counseling to any former residents claiming injury. Though, the lawsuit demands a jury trial and seeks more than $1 million in damages.

And yes, you should know that the Austin-based advocacy group Child-Friendly Faith Project (CFFP) is actively helping the plaintiffs and other victims of abuse. CFFP has been active in calling Ranch responsibility and has set support systems for survivors.

The Impact on Victims

The victims of abuse at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch have suffered greatly psychologically and socially. Based on their experiences, both plaintiffs in the present complaint have suffered from extreme anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems for a long time. While Andy started acting out sexually and was put in a treatment center for young victims of sexual abuse, Stuart, who was older when he arrived, became quite anxious and unhappy.

Without a doubt, many former residents still suffer from the fallout of their mistreatment for years and face huge challenges in life. Among these long-term consequences are drug addiction, homelessness, suicide, and trouble leading consistent lives. The trauma the victims went through at the Ranch has had long-lasting effects on their capacity for functioning and living a normal life once again as adults.
