Most people never expect to need disability or life insurance benefits. They pay their premiums, trust the system, and assume those benefits will be there when life takes an unexpected turn.
Unfortunately, that is not always what happens.
For Baton Rouge Attorney J. Price McNamara, helping people challenge unfair insurance claim denials is more than a legal practice. It is a mission shaped by both professional experience and personal loss.
A Career Changed by Personal Tragedy
Some career decisions are driven by opportunity. Others are driven by life itself.
For Price McNamara, the loss of three close family members changed everything. Within a relatively short period of time, he lost his brother, father, and sister after prolonged and debilitating illnesses.
Experiencing those losses firsthand gave him a new perspective on what families face during difficult times. When people are focused on caring for loved ones, managing medical treatments, and coping with grief, the last thing they should have to worry about is an insurance company delaying or denying benefits they have paid for and counted on.
Before those experiences, McNamara understood insurance disputes from a legal standpoint. Afterward, he understood them from a human one.
That perspective continues to influence how he approaches every client and every case.
Why He Walked Away From Representing Insurance Companies
After graduating from law school, McNamara landed what many young attorneys would consider a dream opportunity.
He joined a prestigious law firm representing major national insurance companies. Newly married and building a future for his family, he was excited about the path ahead.
Over time, however, he began seeing the insurance industry from the inside.
He witnessed how large insurance companies approached claims and how they often worked to minimize payouts or deny benefits altogether. In many situations, deserving claimants found themselves facing enormous obstacles while trying to access benefits they genuinely needed.
The experience was eye-opening.
McNamara realized that representing insurance companies was not the career he wanted to pursue long term. Instead, he made the decision to use the knowledge he had gained to help the people on the other side of those disputes.
That decision ultimately led him to leave insurance defense work and dedicate his career to helping individuals and families fight wrongful claim denials.
The Advantage of Knowing How Insurance Companies Think
One of the most valuable assets an attorney can bring to a disability or life insurance claim is insight into how insurance companies operate.
Because McNamara spent years representing insurers, he understands the strategies they use when evaluating and defending claims.
He knows how claims are analyzed behind the scenes. He understands the arguments insurance companies often rely on when denying benefits. Most importantly, he knows how to challenge those tactics effectively.
What once felt like a detour in his legal career became one of his greatest strengths.
Today, that insider knowledge helps clients navigate complex disability, life insurance, and ERISA claims with confidence.
Building a Career Dedicated to Helping Policyholders
Price McNamara’s legal career began after graduating from Loyola Law School in New Orleans in 1990.
Following graduation, he served as a Federal Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable John M. Shaw, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
He then joined the law firm of Hailey, McNamara, Hall, Larmann & Papale in Metairie, where he represented national insurance companies in claim disputes. During this period, he also pursued an advanced Master of Laws degree in Environmental Law from Tulane Law School while attending classes at night.
In 1995, McNamara left insurance defense practice and spent two years serving the State of Louisiana as a felony trial division prosecutor.
That same year, he founded what would become J. Price McNamara: Disability, Life, AD&D Insurance Attorneys.
His goal was simple. Use his experience and knowledge to help injured and disabled individuals stand up to insurance companies when benefits were unfairly withheld.
A National Practice Focused on ERISA and Disability Claims
Today, McNamara and his team devote their practice exclusively to representing policyholders.
The firm handles disability insurance claims, life insurance disputes, accidental death and dismemberment claims, and cases governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, commonly known as ERISA.
ERISA cases are often particularly challenging because they involve complex federal laws, strict deadlines, and unique procedural requirements. Many claimants do not realize that mistakes made early in the process can significantly impact their ability to recover benefits later.
By focusing exclusively on these areas, McNamara and his team help clients navigate a system that can often feel overwhelming and unfair.
Fighting for People When They Need Help Most
Insurance policies exist to provide financial protection during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Whether someone is coping with a disabling medical condition, grieving the loss of a loved one, or struggling after an unexpected accident, access to promised benefits can make a tremendous difference.
When those benefits are delayed or denied, the consequences can be devastating.
For J. Price McNamara, representing policyholders is about more than legal strategy. It is about helping real people move forward during challenging times.
His journey from insurance defense attorney to advocate for disabled individuals and families reflects a commitment that continues to guide his work today: standing up for those who need someone in their corner when insurance companies refuse to do the right thing.
